Bittersweet Beginnings: Jayden’s First Game of Senior Year
Monday night, I watched Jayden lace up his shoes for the first basketball game of his senior year, and I swear time folded in on itself. One moment, he was the little boy dribbling a ball twice the size of his head, getting to play in the "big gym" for the first time when he was 4 years old. The next, he was standing under the bright gym lights—taller, stronger, and more sure of himself—ready to take the court for the start of a season we’ve been building toward for years.
Being the mom of a senior hits differently. It’s not just watching from the bleachers; it’s replaying every scraped knee, every late-night practice, every pep talk on the drive home. It’s realizing that all those small everyday moments were actually the big ones. As he ran out with his team last night, the excitement of the first game of the season, the crowd on their feet, I felt that familiar mix of pride and ache—my heart cheering him on while also whispering, Slow down. Just a little.
Photography has always been my way of holding on to the pieces of life that move too fast, and this season will be no different. Every shot I take of Jayden—every moment frozen in time—is more than a picture. It’s a reminder of how far he’s come. It’s the story of growth, grit, and love stitched into the fabric of these years.
This game was the beginning of his last chapter in high school basketball. A season full of hope, hard work, and final memories before bigger adventures call his name. And while it’s bittersweet, it’s also beautiful. Because getting to witness your child become who they’re meant to be is the greatest honor there is.
Here’s to senior year. Here’s to first games and last seasons. Here’s to pride, gratitude, and a mama’s heart learning how to let go—one picture at a time.
